tinygraypaw.gif (889 bytes)  What is A Maine Coon?

The Maine Coon is one of the oldest natural breeds and is considered the only native long-haired cat in North America.  It's name originates partly because it is regarded as a native of the state of Maine and also because it's large, shaggy appearance and fluffy, ringed, tail may have caused it to be mistaken for a racoon.

Originally, settlers from Europe brought their cats with them to the new world.   As the descendents of those cats multiplied, the harsh New England climate established the Maine Coon as a handsome, rugged cat.  Breeders today strive to preserve the Maine Coon's natural, hearty qualities and as a result the Maine Coon remains a strong, healthy cat.

Maine Coons are one of the largest domestic cats. They develop slowly, sometimes taking three to five years to reach full maturity.  They are muscular, big boned cats.   Males typically reach 14-18 pounds, while females are somewhat smaller at 9 to 12 pounds.

tinygraypaw.gif (889 bytes)  What Colors Do They Come In?

Even though the traditional Maine Coon color is the brown tabby, Maine Coons come in every color with the exception of Siamese-like pointed colors.  More and more we are seeing silver, red, blue, cream and patched tabbies.   Maine Coons also come in solid colors such as black, white, red, blue or tortoiseshell.  Any of these colors can be with white bib, belly and feet.  Eye color is almost always green, gold, or a combination of both.  The exception is a solid white Maine Coon which may have blue eyes or one blue eye and one gold eye.

Maine Coons are intelligent, playful, and very sweet natured.  They love their people and are excellent for families with children, dogs, and other cats.  They have easily groomed coats as a result of the shaggy nature of the coat which is shorter on the shoulders and longer on the stomach and britches.  A weekly combing is usually all that's needed to keep the coat in top shape.

Affectionately named "Gentle Giants", Maine Coons remain kitten-like and playful throughout their lives.  Their distinctive chirping trill sets them apart from other breeds and even their "meow" is surprisingly soft and tiny.   Maine Coons may be the perfect domestic pet.  They enjoy staying close by and helping with whatever is going on.  They love to talk to their people and tell about their day, waiting for an opportunity to play.  The Maine Coon's affectionate nature, clown-like personality and low maintenance coat have earned it the distinction of being America's favorite cat.
